Position Description
Join the University of Alaska Fairbanks Facilities Services team and help keep campus running safely and efficiently. This position is responsible for operating campus shuttle buses and supporting a variety of facilities maintenance and grounds operations. In addition to providing safe and reliable transportation for students, employees, and visitors, this position assists with building maintenance, grounds upkeep, snow and debris removal, material handling, and other operational support as needed. The successful candidate will safely operate 13-, 18-, 21-, or 33-passenger shuttle buses while adhering to established routes and schedules. Responsibilities include assisting passengers, operating wheelchair lifts for individuals with mobility needs, performing pre-trip inspections and minor operational maintenance on assigned vehicles, and providing excellent customer service. When not assigned to shuttle operations, this position supports Facilities Services with maintenance, grounds, and operational duties across campus. This is a union represented position. Shuttle driver may be tasked with other duties as assigned. Under supervision, may routinely perform a variety of semi-skilled maintenance and light construction duties in a combination of several trades or crafts such as plumbing; carpentry; painting; landscape and agricultural installation and maintenance; light construction; and equipment maintenance. Knowledge of state, local, and campus traffic laws and a strong commitment to operating shuttle buses safely in all weather conditions, including Alaska winters. You will have excellent customer service skills and enjoy interacting with a diverse campus community in a courteous and professional manner. You should be comfortable using basic hand tools to perform light maintenance and routine pre-trip vehicle inspections, while demonstrating the ability to follow instructions, work independently with minimal supervision, and collaborate effectively with others. Success in this role requires the ability to perform physically demanding work outdoors in adverse weather conditions and to safely operate a variety of shuttle buses and equipment. You must possess and maintain a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger and air brake endorsements and maintain a clean driving record. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated work history that reflects these knowledge, skills, and abilities and a commitment to performing work safely and effectively. A background check and pre-employment drug screening are required before a final offer of employment. Must have and always maintain a current Commercial Driver's License with passenger and airbrakes endorsements with a clean record. Requires apprentice level or other equivalent certification appropriate to the specific trade; with a minimum of three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
